Demand Justice for Larry the Cat

In January, a police officer in Bloomfield, Nebraska, trapped and fatally shot a beloved two-year-old pet cat named Larry. He then dumped Larry’s body behind a shed. This devastating act of cruelty violates the state animal cruelty law and city ordinances, yet the officer was only given a written reprimand. Everything is wrong with this picture.

Demand justice for Larry and his owners. Officers should be educating residents about how to treat animals humanely and coexist peacefully—NOT shooting and killing cats and violating the laws they’re supposed to enforce.

When Larry went missing on January 13, his owners took immediate action to find him—knocked on doors, posted on Facebook—but after two days, they called the chief of police who confirmed Larry had been trapped and killed. They were devastated to learn that their beloved Larry was a victim of Bloomfield Police Department’s actions. The mayor has even admitted that the officer killed Larry.

Mayor Phil Schroeder,

In regards to the police officer who shoots trapped cats:

It is a black mark on the city of Bloomfield to have a police officer who traps and shoots cats without any natural empathy for a living being or concern that the animal is a beloved pet. The police officer's flagrant violation of the law and subsequent slap on the wrist have surely broken the trust of the people of Bloomfield. It is not appropriate that a person who acts with no regard to the law should deign to enforce it for others. I ask that the police officer be removed from his position and given a psychiatric evaluation, considering that cruelty to animals is often an indicator of dangerous behavior towards humans.

On news coverage regarding the incident, I was surprised to see your consideration that all pet cats be chipped. I do not see a connection between helping to reunite lost cats with their owners and a sick man who traps and ruthlessly kills cats without concern as to their status as pet or stray.

I have created a petition in order to show that decent people not only in our country but around the world are outraged by that police officer's actions. Please work with Alley Cat Allies so that the city of Bloomfield may make the news for more positive actions.

Thank-you for your time and attention in this matter,

Debra A. Schaefer
