Petition to Reinstate the Proposed Downtown Shuttle for Downtown Halifax

Petition to Reinstate the Proposed Downtown Shuttle for Downtown Halifax

Target:
residents of Halifax Regional Municipality

We the residents of the Halifax Regional Municipality, formally request the Downtown Shuttle planned for the Downtown Halifax area be reinstated into the 5 year Transit Plan for the Municipality.

For 3 years the public have anticipated this service, which would provide free services to commuters, residents and workers within the downtown.

Regarding the environment, this type of hybrid transit reduces the carbon footprint of our Municipality as well.

According to HRM by Design, the municipality%u2019s new urban design policy, a downtown shuttle would be a boon to the area.

"Creation of a frequent, high-capacity shuttle transit service within the downtown, and with connections to nearby destinations such as hospitals and universities, has several benefits."

"Firstly, it can expand the reach of express transit services and ferries which stop at a single location downtown. It can improve connectivity within the downtown for visitors, shoppers, and employees alike. Using hybrid diesel-electric buses, the service can also reduce the impacts of buses on the downtown by reducing noise and emissions and allowing some routes to transfer passengers and turn around before entering the downtown."

The Proposed 5 Year Plan for Transit must reinstated the Downtown Shuttle back into the 5 Year Plan.

If the shuttle runs frequently and has stops at a decent terminal like the ferry terminals (i.e., at the Willow Tree / old St Patricks HS area ) commuters can make a easy and comfortable shift from the fast loading (front doors and back) frequent shuttles to the longer haul buses to north and west.... and vice versa. Fewer buses on Barrington, but much more frequent "get me out of the rain" services that get me to a dry place to wait for the bus to get me home. Collect the fares on entry to the terminal, and save time on first loading the outbound buses. Since most commuters are going to pay at the terminal, the net effect is a saw-off. No fare box downtown, but almost all will pay the fare ( a fair one we hope, with a fair contribution from the Province.

I think the idea of a shuttle using the hybrid diesel electric buses is a fantastic idea and makes sense now and for the future. Just do it!

I believe this transit shuttle would be a boon to tourist and could be part of a progressive efficient transit system for HRM - one that we could be proud of and enjoy using.

I'm constantly amazed that an administration which likes to desinate the municipality as Smart City continues to act in a manner that promotes the opposite. A shuttle bus service would be a major benefit to citizens, visitors and businesses in the city. Please reinstate the shuttle to the five year plan.

HRM should stop being flakey with public transit. If you make promises such as a downtown shuttle, or a completed and accurate GoTime system. You should follow through with it. Stop breaking promises!

Downtown Halifax needs a faster free way to get around town . I have seen many tourists liking the concept as it helps them with getting to see many places in a short run.ty please keep fred!

I live on the peninsula and work downtown - one of the reasons is so that I don't need to commute. We chose to only have one car... Now please get me on a bus more frequently than every 30 minutes!

I rely on either my two feet or public transit, since I have no vehicle. The downtown shuttle would be a great service for me personally. But I am also concerned about the environment. I support any improvement to public transit which will get cars off the streets.

A free downtown shuttle will help people run errands on their lunch break and fight the bitterly cold Halifax winter. It is a great attraction for tourists and makes the city seem oh-so inviting.

I have seen the benefits of this in other cities. Halifax would benefit from this as well. I have not heard any valid reasons as to why it was dropped from the 5 year Transit Plan.

The downtown shuttle would be a forward thinking move, and would allow Metro Transit to consider re-routing some existing buses that currently clog up Spring Garden and Barrington Streets, each carrying about half a dozen riders. It would be a great facility for tourists as well. This is a great idea that should be implemented immediately, or as soon as possible.

A full comprehensive approach to human transportation or mobility has to be created and implemented ASAP. Incentives can do much. For examples, free bus shuttle downtown, safe bike paths and lock up systems, more transit routes and frequency with instant communication of when the buses are coming, carshare parking spots and bylaws for not building parking in developments, employees working from home part time, carpooling incentives, tax rebate if you do not own a car, bonuses for carpoolers to work, etc. We are not re-creating the wheel here, technology and solutions exist to decrease the amount of traffic and parking constraints, decrease GHG's and enhance a better quality of life for Haligonians. C'mon HRM, we can do this!

Anything to reduce the number of single-driver downtown commuters is a must. Public transportation is crucial!

I am originally from Halifax and am actually at the present, thinking of moving back. It would be wonderful to have a shuttle so that there would be less cars especially in the downtown core.

I'm all for it because there is no space to park downtown and it would mke me and a lot of other people very happy

A downtown shuttle creates a win/win/win (people/government/environment) situation. Halifax, let's support initiatives that are people-friendly and earth-friendly!

Good for citizens and visitors and good for the environment. The downtown is challenging to navigate. Anything to facilitate that is a good thing!

Anything & everything that can be done to make the "Downtown Experience" enjoyable for visitors and residents should be done. With parking at a premium & the distances are not great it makes sense to have a short haul shuttle service along with the "Link" and express bus system.
