Don't let Moose Jaw city council allow animal killings

Currently, the Moose Jaw Humane Society is subsidizing the city pound by 66% in order to keep animals safe and alive. The Moose Jaw city council refuses to pay their portion and have threatened to out-source the city pound to private contractors who, in all likelihood, will kill the animals after the 72 hour deadline to make a profit.
In order to save these animals, the Humane Society has had to prioritize it’s (very limited) funding, which has resulted in building upkeep suffering greatly - doors are falling off, black mold has been found, there are holes in the walls... Each day, they choose to save these animals but have them live in squalor because the Moose Jaw city council refuses to pay for the services they've asked of the Society.
To put it in perspective, all the Humane Society is asking for is the equivalent of 56 cents per MONTH per citizen. Council won't even discuss the matter.
Please, tell the Moose Jaw city council that they need to pay their portion of the services they request and we refuse to have our animals killed after 72 hours!

Dear Moose Jaw City Council,

For many years, the Moose Jaw Humane Society has subsidized the city pound which was created at the behest of council. As the years have passed, this arrangement has become less and less acceptable. The Humane Society already runs with a limited budget, but due to their love of animals - and the citizens of Moose Jaw's love for animals - they have continued to subsidize what should be the financial responsibility of the city.

Due to their lack of finances for the city pound aspect of the business - which the city should be paying to provide - they have had to neglect other areas of need. This ranges from the spay and neutering of many animals - one of the main purposes of a Humane Society - to the maintenance of the shelter. As we hope you are aware, there are holes in the walls, doors falling off and even black mold has been found which is deadly to both the animals and the humans.

We have heard the rebuttal message that your spokespeople have given which is that council wants the Humane Society to give a breakdown of costs. We are also well aware that council is not asking for a breakdown of city pound costs but instead for the costs of the philanthropic side of the Society. The philanthropic side of the Society is not a city service or department but is a private, not for profit business which is not to be victim to council's scrutiny but is instead accountable to the individual supporters of the organization.

Please start fulfilling your responsibility for city pound financing and ensure that all these animals have an opportunity to have a wonderful life.

Sincerely,

Jayna Gilchrist, Mike Prefontaine
