Justice for Rocky, an innocent dog shot by his caregiver

Rocky was a sweet, young, male pit bull. His human moved away from his home but did not, or could not, take Rocky with him. Instead, he left Rocky in the care of his ex and her children. The ex then had a new man move in with her.

On the early morning of June 14 at approximately 3:00 AM my husband and I were awoken by the sounds of gun fire. We went out our back door to see who was shooting as the sounds of the gunfire were coming from behind our house. The man next door where Rocky lived was out there with a rapid fire gun shooting and we heard Rocky yelp as though he were being hit. My husband called the Sheriff's office. He mistakenly told this man that he did.

The man immediately got in his SUV and took off. We could not see what he was doing, but we are positive that he took Rocky's body and drove him somewhere to dump him. When the deputies arrived, we told them the details of what we heard and what this man did and how he took off in his vehicle. The deputies knocked next door and whoever was home told them that they did not hear any gunfire. The deputies also told us that they did not hear a dog barking, nor did they see a dog when the person opened the door to answer their knock.

After the deputies left (they were next door for around 20 to 25 minutes) I watched and saw the SUV pull back into the driveway. The deputies were right behind and stopped the man to ask him about the gunfire and about Rocky. They were told by this man that he had gotten rid of Rocky weeks ago. No other investigation has been made into the disappearance of this sweet boy.

I am hoping that with enough signatures the Sheriff's office will ask for proof of where Rocky is and if none can be shown that charges will be brought against this man for the needless shooting death of Rocky.

Gates County Sheriff's Office

Dear Sheriff Webb:

As you may be aware, on the morning of June 14 at approximately 3:30 AM, we were awoken by the sound of gunfire coming from our next door neighbor's house. We called the sheriff's office to alert them to what we heard and what transpired.  Along with the sound of gunfire, we heard their dog yelping, as if being hurt.  Before the deputies arrived, the neighbor got in his SUV and took off.  When asked later on about the dog, the deputies were told that he got rid of Rocky weeks ago.

We are petitioning the Sheriff's office to further investigate the whereabouts of Rocky and if proof cannot be given, that this man be held accountable for the shooting death of this innocent dog.  We were told that without a body nothing can be done.  Let the burden of proof be put on this man, not on us.  Ask him to come up with proof that Rocky is alive and well.  If not, then charge him with the killing of an innocent dog.

Sincerely,

Marcella Cannatella
