Wisconsin's Circus World has failed to monitor the health safety and elephants that it exhibits, and also failed to protect the public's health and saftey, allowing circuses with sick elephants and dozens of U.S. Department of Agriculture violations to perform on its grounds.
Recently, Circus World exhibited four elephants supplied by Carson & Barnes Circus, which, in violation of state law, did not have permits to bring elephants into Wisconsin. Carson & Barnes has a long history of violating the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA). In late September 2012, the circus paid a penalty for 10 AWA violations, including endangering the public and elephants.
Circus World has also hosted the Liebel Family Circus, which was recently formally charged with almost three dozen violations of the AWA.
We are urging Wisconsin Historical Society Board of Curators to implement a policy prohibiting Circus World from exhibiting elephants at its facility.
