Eddie's Law

Ed Lakata was riding his bicycle in Fulton County, New York when he was hit by a pickup truck on June 25, 2013..  Ed died at the scene.   The driver had a history of driving under the influence of prescription drugs.  The driver had passed out at the wheel of his vehicle in 2010 and crashed his car.  He later told a reporter that he regularly took pain medication and sleeping pills.

After the accident with Lakata, Fulton County Sheriff Thomas Lorey said he couldn't order a chemical test because there was no obvious evidence that drugs were involved in the crash.

A month after the Lakata accident, the driver again crashed his car, and this time a chemical test was ordered.  The driver was found to have drugs in his system and charged with DWAI.

We, the signers of this petition, believe that drug and alcohol testing should be mandatory under the law whenever personal injury or death occurs as the result of a motor vehicle accident.  We want a state law, named "Eddie's Law", passed by the New York State legislature and signed by the governor.
