Cotons say No to AKC

Coton Lovers Protest Against AKC Recognition

Target:
American Kennel Club ~ Foundation Stock Service    (AKC FSS)

There are five National Coton Clubs in the U.S.  They are all unique and provide a needed balance for dealing with issues concerning the breed.  Many Coton owners belong to several of the clubs.  One club has announced its decision to pursue AKC recognition.  The major advantages proposed for AKC recognition is that the show venues are more convenient. The major disadvantages that have emerged from a focus group is that an AKC parent club loses much control.  The registry is lost to AKC and lumped together with the pedigrees of the large volume breeders which AKC solicits at the puppy auctions.  There seems to be a widespread decline in the health of breeds which become recognized by the AKC.  Many Coton lovers do not want to support and promote an organization which actively supports and legitimizes puppymills and pet shop puppies from which much of their revenue is said to derive. We present a petition to the Coton Community to register a protest against these practices.

The Coton de Tulear breed is a relatively healthy rare breed that we all love and want to preserve it's amazing qualities by keeping the Cotons out of AKC. Please join us in our passionate drive to keep our Cotons safe, healthy, and away from the certain irrevocable fate that follows breed recognition by the AKC. If you are so disposed, please sign the petition.  There is some understanding that AKC may listen to all parties, and the petition is intended to be sent to the AKC representatives responsible for making the decision as to whether to honor the request of the club which is planning to petition for AKC recognition or whether to listen to the wishes of the entire Coton Community.

This is our breed we are fighting for...we will not get a 2nd chance should a Coton club lead our Cotons to the  AKC.....

Please join the Coton Community in this protest against AKC recognition for our beloved breed by signing the petition below

We also urge you to please call, email, write letters daily to AKC expressing your objections for AKC recognition of our marvelous breed.

I don't believe it necessary to obtain AKC recognition. What few benefits are not worth the risks of puppy mills.

Cotons are the best tempered and healthyiest breed of small dogs and it is a result of the restrictions Coton breeders have chosen to follow. This will be lost if the AKA gets involved! Please leave Cotons to Coton breeders and lovers!!!

I do not believe the AKC has the best interest of the breed or dog as a primary objective. In some cases their standards are ridiculously unhealthy for the dog and a detriment to the breed. It is irresponsible in it's support of inbreeding, and complacency with puppy mills and pet shop puppies. The health of the animal and the solidity of the breed must be the primary objective of any breed club. That means physically and socially healthy animals.

We need to keep our Cotons free of exploitation as much as possible. There is no need for AKC recognition.

The AKC does not insure good breeding practices.

Part of the reason why I chose to get a coton was due to the fact that this breed is relatively healthy. Allowing them in the AKC will result in more haphazard breeding simply for profit-- NO to the AKC!

I am morally and ethically opposed to puppymills and pet shops that sell puppies. We humans must be a voice for the voiceless!

The reason I bought and researched this breed was because of the many character traits and overall health. I feel that if this wonderful dog gets in the hands of the AKC we will start seeing a major difference in who breeds this dog and the overall health of the Coton de Tulear. As an owner I am strongly against the vanity breeding of the AKC.

Akc and the show fancy has lled to the destruction of many fine breeds. Please keep the Cotons out of AKC

# 756:

This is important because the Coton is a special breed and has none of the illnesses that plague other breed from over-breeding. Please leave the Cotons alone and allow us to enjoy them.

I care about the health and temperament staying intact by keeping the Coton de Tulear out of the AKC. AKC leads to overbreeding and careless breeding. The lengths the current breeders take with the health clearances and bloodline checks make for healthy, happy dogs AND owners. Please keep the Coton de Tulear out of the AKC!

I feel strongly that the AKC has never stopped puppy mills and pet stores. In not doing anything about this horrible problem. this has only increased the amount of unwanted dogs and cats roaming the streets, and in shelters with overcrowding to add insult to injury. But, they will take your check to register your litter.

As a former breeder of Golden Retrievers I can attest to what poor breeding by "back yard" breeders produces. Dogs are bred without regard for breed standards, health clearances, temperament, or bloodline history.

I have grown up around cotons and I loathe the idea of this beautiful breed becoming part of the AKC. The whole idea appalls me.

When the Jack Russell terriers were recognized by the AKC as the 'Parson' terriers I noticed that there were quite a few puppies being sold in the pet shops that I visited. It broke my heart to imagine these wonderful and spirited puppies locked in wire cages overnight with the only consolation being all the other puppies crying. I also saw a number of these pups at the local humane society where they were dropped off by their owners after realizing that a breed like a Jack Russell needs consistant strong love. Cotons are a sesitive and loving breed. They deserve better than to be popularized to the point where they bred in puppy mills and tortured in pet stores.

# 702:

I love my Cotons. I do not want to see these beautiful, healthy, smart animals bred into oblivion by the puppy mills that will certainly take interest if the breed is recognized by the AKC.

I have 4 Cotons who have brought me so much Joy. Cotons give so much love, we owe it to them to keep them safe from harm. They depend on us to take care of them and protect them. If AKC gets a hold of them, thousands of Cotons will be placed in horrifing situtions.
