Nebraska: Don't Deny Lesbian Woman Her Driver's License!

Nebraska woman Sue Stroesser took her lesbian partner's last name when the two married in Iowa after same sex marriage was made legal in 2009. Her latest Social Security card, passport and credit cards reflect her name change, but when she went to get a new driver's license, DMV officials turned her away.

The Nebraska DMV asked her for documentation of her name change because her old driver's license had her maiden name. When she presented her marriage certificate, DMV staff said they couldn't accept it because Nebraska doesn't recognize same-sex marriage. Stroesser has paid Nebraska taxes under her new name for three years, and had a driver's license for 35 years.

Nebraska is cruel to deny her the driving privileges she earned just because they don't approve of her sexual orientation. Her personal relationships have nothing to do with her ability to drive, and Nebraska is wrong to discriminate against her. Please sign the petition to urge the DMV to stop discriminating against LGBT people!

We, the undersigned, are concerned with your decision to deny a driver's license to Nebraska woman Sue Stroesser.

As we understand, Stroesser took her lesbian partner's last name when the two married in Iowa after same sex marriage was made legal in 2009.

The DMV has no business denying her the driving privileges she earned just because you don't approve of her sexual orientation. Her personal relationships have nothing to do with her ability to drive, and her name change is legal and recognized by the federal government. We urge you to stop discriminating against LGBT people and to let Stroesser have her driver's licence. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
