Stand Up for Rape Survivors: Pass the Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act!

  • by: Paige D
  • recipient: House of Representatives

Not too long ago, I had written a petition in support of protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors, who have to endure suffering every six months to make sure their rape kit is kept on file.  With this, the current system is causing more pain for survivors instead of lessoning it.

With around 70% of incidents of sexual assault that already go unreported, something has to change.

The Senate has passed the Sexual Assault Survivors Bill of Rights, which would grant basic rights for survivors of sexual assault.  Now, this new legislation needs to be passed by the House of Representatives.

This legislation needs your help to make it a law.

Under new legislation, survivor’s basic rights include:

“1. The right to have a sexual assault evidence collection kit preserved for the entire relevant statute of limitations.

2. The right to be notified in writing 60 days prior to the destruction of a sexual assault evidence collection kit.

3. The right to request further preservation of a sexual assault evidence collection kit.

4. The right to be informed of important results of a sexual assault forensic examination.”

We can no longer tolerate cruel behavior towards survivors of sexual assault, we need to stand together in support for their rights.

Please sign to tell the House of Representatives to pass the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Rights Act, making it into a law.

House of Representatives,

We strongly urge you to ensure the passage of the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Rights Act, making it into a law.

It is cruel that a woman has to be reminded of her sexual assault incident every 6 months, if they have any hope of getting legal justice from their perpetrators.

Victims have been through enough trauma already; the legal system does not need to add to their pain.
