Alberta: Make Airlines Pay Their Fair Share of Carbon Tax

  • by: Amelia Meister
  • recipient: Shannon Phillips, Minister of Environment Alberta

Alberta has made a bold step in instituting a carbon tax that will come into effect in later this year. However, this carbon tax has exempted a huge carbon emitting sector: the airline industry.

In the current iteration of the legislation, airlines will only have to pay the carbon tax on emissions for domestic flights within Alberta. All other flights will be exempt from the carbon tax.

The purpose of a carbon tax is that it applies to everyone in all industries in order to create carbon emissions savings and revenue to move towards renewable energy sources. If it does not apply to one of the biggest emitters, then it is not fulfilling its purpose.

Sign now to tell Alberta that airlines must pay their fair share of the carbon tax. By signing today you are sending a strong message that airlines must be responsible for their emissions.

To the Honourable Shannon Phillips,

As someone who is greatly concerned about climate change I am very happy to hear about the carbon tax being instituted in Alberta. However, I am incredibly displeased with the exemption of airlines from the tax.

I call upon you to change this exemption and make airlines pay the carbon tax on all flights leaving Alberta, instead of just domestic flights. In order for carbon taxes to work all industries must be responsible for their share of the burden.
