Trudeau: Visit Attawapiskat Immediately to Address First Nations Suicide Crisis

Attawapiskat First Nation, a remote reserve in Northern Ontario, is facing a suicide crisis. With over 20 suicide attempts from children in the last week, the small community of 2000 is bringing to the forefront the horrible effects of colonialism on the First Nations peoples in Canada.

For the last week, protestors across the country have been occupying Indigenous and Northern Affairs (INAC) offices across the country, to demand PM Trudeau go to Attawapiskat personally to witness conditions, speak with leaders and address the situation.

After such grandiose talk of reconciliation and moving forward with First Nations in this country, Justin Trudeau has been avoiding directly acting on his promises. Reconciliation means more than fancy talk; it demands a change of direction, action and attitude of the government of Canada.

Sign today to hold Prime Minister Trudeau accountable to his commitment to First Nations. By signing today you are standing with Attawapiskat First Nation and all the First Nations across the land that are experiencing the overwhelming fall out of government inflicted colonial practices.

To the Honourable Prime Minister Trudeau,

As a person greatly concerned with the suicide crisis on First Nation reserves all across Canada, and specifically in Attawapiskat First Nation, I demand that you visit Attawapiskat First Nation immediately to witness, first hand, the crisis there and to address the needs of communities all across the country that have suffered from government sanctioned violence, inaction and genocide.

It is time that the words of reconciliation are put to action and that your government addresses, immediately, the horrible conditions First Nations has been forced into, by the government, in this country.

Visit Attawapiskat immediately and start the healing process.
