Urge the U.S. Government to Protect the Scarlet Macaw

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is considering decreasing the protections for scarlet macaws under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

The ESA previously protected only two types of macaws as endangered. The changes being proposed by USFWS will now list all known wild populations of scarlet macaw. While this is progress, USFWS is considering downgrading these macaws from "endangered" to "threatened" status. This will mean reduced protections for these rare birds.

Many scarlet macaws are held as pets and illegal wildlife trade is the biggest threat to the future of wild populations. Another major threat is deforestation resulting in the loss of macaw habitat. Despite all the evidence that would favor a listing of "endangered", the USFWS is considering fewer protections for this amazing bird.

We only have until June 6 to make our voices heard. Please sign this petition to urge the USFWS to protect the scarlet macaw as "endangered" under the ESA.

Dear [decision maker],

As an animal lover, I am writing to urge you to protect all populations of the scarlet macaw as "endangered" under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Many scarlet macaws are held as pets and illegal wildlife trade is the biggest threat to the future of wild populations. Another major threat is deforestation resulting in the loss of macaw habitat.

Based on these threats, I urge you to give this species and all populations an "endangered" status under the ESA.
