Put Longford on the map!

Google have overlooked the town of Longford on their Google Maps service, where the town is peculiarly referred to as ‘Prospect Wood' - in reality a decade-old housing estate on the edge of town. One can zoom in to see various towns such as Edgeworthstown, Lanesborough and Ballymahon highlighted. Moving northwards, one can see even small towns in Cavan such as Village and Killeshandra also flagged.

It's unknown just how the employees of Google Maps got the impression this town went by the name of 'Prospect Wood', but it can't continue! The campaign to put Longford on the map starts here... please sign your name and make Google aware of this mistake!

Dear Google,

We would like to draw your attention to a glaring error on your Google Maps and Google Earth facilities. Somehow, the town of Longford, Ireland (population 19,979) has been excluded and replaced by ‘Prospect Wood’, which is in fact a housing estate located in the outskirts of the town, with a population measured in the hundreds. While it is possible to view ‘Longford’ by using the zoom function, it’s status is relegated to that of a minor townland.

To put things in perspective, Prospect Wood has existed for less than a decade, while the origins of the town of Longford can be traced back to the 1400s and today it is the largest urban area in the county. Through the ages, its status has been acknowledged by every cartographic survey to map the area. For example, here is a 19th Century Ordance Survey map featuring Longford as a prominent regional town:

We hereby request that you restore Longford to its rightful place on the map.

Yours sincerely...
