Dalhousie University: Stop Animal Experimentation!

Animal research is outdated. There are many techniques that are not only more humane, but more scientific. These involve: clinical studies, epidemiological tracking, human volunteer studes, in vitro testing, etc.

Disasters have resulted from animal testing, because even a chimpanzee, our closest living relatives, do not have the exact same reactions to infections or drugs we do.  A rat or a mouse is even less reliable. The drug Vioxx, for example was approved for human use after it was tested on animals. It caused 60,000 human deaths in the U.S alone. Penicillin was kept off the market because of results in non human animals.

Not only is it unscientific, it is cruel. Animals are not here to be our slaves. They are beings, with feelings. They deseve better than to be locked up their whole lives, and subjected to useless experiments. Even if the experiments were useful, which they are not, the ends do not justify the means. There is always an alternative to animal testing, and there is no such thing as 'humane' laboratory animal care. If there was, and the experiments are not painful, then why can we not do them on humans? Because it is not humane.
