Ontario: Close the Wage Gap and Give Midwives a Raise

  • by: Amelia Meister
  • recipient: Dr Eric Hoskins, Health Minister of Ontario

Ontario premier Kathleen Wynne pledged, when she got into office, to work at closing the wage gap in the province, which is hovering around 29.4%. This means women have to work 29.4% more to make the same amount of money as their male counterparts.

For midwives, it is even greater, an estimated 48% less. These primary care providers work as hard as their male counterparts (obstetricians and family doctors) and yet they are vastly underpaid in comparison.

Midwives in Ontario often cannot meet the demand of women looking for care, already providing care for some 14% of all births in the province. These are highly trained, professional, female health care providers who are being completely lost in the wage gap, having their work undervalued by the province.

Sign today to demand a fairer wage for these important health care providers. By signing you are sending a strong message that you value women in primary birth health care.

To The Honourable Dr Eric Hoskins,

As someone who greatly values midwifery care and sees the importance in offering an alternative to standard obstetrics, I demand that you give midwives equal pay.

Midwives provide, in the province of Ontario, incredibly comprehensive pre-natal, natal and post-natal care. They are highly trained professionals with equivalent responsibilities as their male counterparts working in medicine and obstetrics.

Midwives are a wholly female dominated profession and it is unreasonable that they are not given equal pay for equal work.

Under your government's mandate to close the wage gap, it is imperative that you raise the income of midwives in this province to be equivalent to their male counterparts.
