Hire All Female Directors for Season 3 of The Handmaid's Tale!

Season one of Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale," was one of the best TV shows of 2017. With a whopping 13 Emmy nominations, it not only garnered viewers but also earned well-deserved acclaim.

The series — which focuses on a dystopian post-America where women have been relegated to a life of sexual servitude — was in part so groundbreaking because four out of five directors were female.

They helped set the tone for a series that dealt with serious issues of violence against women. Traumatic scenes were deliberate and poignant, instead of the garish scenes Hollywood usually doles out.

But viewers of season two might notice something has changed. As one commentator puts it, the graphic scenes of violence against women in season two are "exploitative, like every other show using women's trauma for gruesome window dressing..."

That might have something to do with the fact that there are fewer female directors this season. This is disappointing because the show was so groundbreaking. Unfortunately, out of the six episodes released to critics, only two were directed by women.

It is painfully obvious that the lack of female directors has resulted in a much more graphic and gratuitous portrayal of female violence.

Violence in TV and film happens to both men and women, however, men are usually active agents in the violence against one another. Women, on the other hand, are often powerless and the violence perpetrated upon them in film is often unnecessary to the plot.

According to experts, being constantly subjected to this type of violence can alter your mood, normalize such abuse and even numb us to the violence that happens every day against women in the real world.

That's why it is so important to include women directors in Hollywood in general, but in a series like The Handmaid's Tale - which deals with female trauma in virtually every episode, it is crucial. Women should have a part in telling these stories not just acting in them.
