Canada, Raise Liability Limits For Oil, Gas or Nuclear Disasters

Canada's focus on growth has left it failing miserably in environmental and liability protection. And it's setting itself up for disaster if an accident occurs.

Canada's commissioner of the environment Scott Vaughan recently filed a report condemning the government's failure to properly regulate either offshore drilling in the Atlantic, mining in the North or the hundreds of thousands of shale gas wells that have sprung up across Canada.

The report says that Canada is unequipped to handle a nuclear accident or a major oil spill, and Vaughan says risks involving fracking are even more uncertain because of regulation exemptions.

Furthermore, Canada's liability limits for accidents are far lower than in other countries and so outdated that taxpayers could be left with a huge financial burden if something goes wrong.

Until Canada can get its act together on regulation and monitoring, it must be properly prepared for accidents. Tell Canada to raise the liability limits for oil, gas or nuclear disasters.

We, the undersigned, expect Canada to do a better job of protecting its environment, its wildlife, its citizens and its economy.

All of these are suffering and could face serious repercussions because of the country's failure to properly regulate and monitor its boom in natural resourcs as well as update its liability limits.

Scott Vaughan wrote in his report that the "... findings, when considered with our concerns regarding preparedness to effectively respond to a major oil spill, show clearly that Canadians are exposed to environmental risks and the financial implications that go with them."

Of further concern is how Canada has lagged behind in its failure to meet even minimal requirements of the Ocean Act in protecting its marine areas. As a result, Vaughan told the Huffington Post, "Canada's oceans are increasingly threatened by pollution, overfishing and climate change."

Taking into account the report findings on Canada's outdated regulation and monitoring of oil, gas and nuclear production, its nonregulation of fracking, its failure in marine protection, along with it's outdated and meagre liability limits, the government is setting the country up for environmental and economic disaster.

Action must be taken toward reform and, in the meantime, immediate attention to liability limits is crucial.

We request the government raise liability limits for oil, gas or nuclear disasters at once.

Thanks for your time.
