Time to Rethink Marijuana

When arguing for enforcement of its federal status, Chris Christie stated that marijuana is a gateway drug. Although Christie’s statement may be true, he neglected to mention that alcohol and tobacco have similar effects on the brain.
A recent Study was done in the journal of school health by a team of researchers from Texas A&M and the University of Florida which examined data from 2,800 us 12th graders in order to find out which substances teens typically used first. Their findings showed that the vast majority of students used alcohol prior to even Tobacco or marijuana. They posted their results in their paper entitled “Prioritizing alcohol prevention.”
We should also look at the effects of countries and states that have legalized marijuana use. For instance since the legalization of marijuana in Holland there have been fewer young pot smokers, therefore, fewer instances of the gateway effect. A 2010 report from the rand institute entitled “What can we learn from the Dutch Cannabis Coffee Shop Experience” found that the gateway effect was less so in the Netherlands verses countries that had band marijuana. If marijuana is legal in Holland with few instances of the gateway effect, why would it be any different if we legalized it here? I hope you will consider this and end the prohibition of marijuana that plagued this country for years.
