End Hawaii Pesticide Use NOW!

From the beginnings of pesticide usage in Hawaii it has always seemed wrong for the purpose of using this poison/chemical to keep away insects or weeds. Why should we need them? we already have everything provided from mother earth right? Farmers are becoming way too lazy, and taking the easy way out of growing produce. Assuming that every single crop should turn out perfect, but that is not reality. By farmers doing this they are basically creating chemically exposed produce for consumers, and now apparently creating something too good to be true. In 2000 the US as a whole has used 948 million pounds of pesticides, then 7 years later in 2007 decreasing only to 877 million pounds that year. But that's only about 1% per year, and still close to a billion pounds of toxic chemicals intentionally introduced into our food supply and the environment each year.

A very harmful active ingredient called herbicide glyphosate in Monsanto's RoundUp Ready genetically modified crops. It is absolutely horrible, from 85-90 million pounds of herbicide glyphosate in 2001 to 180-185 million pounds in 2007. In that one time period it had more than doubled in use! Another problem with pesticides comes GMO's(Genetically Modified Organisms) that are anything but good for you and defiantly not normal on any level. Organisms are meant to be natural and provided by the earth, not genetically altered. This will not help our beautiful islands of Hawaii, it's residence and school students like me island wide who will suffer the harmful effects for years and years to come. If you want to stop this on going travesty in Hawaii please sign now!

Dear Mayor Kirk Caldwell,

Hawaii is very threatend by the concept of pesticides and needs help.  For years now it has been a very stressed topic. I as a student of Kalani High school have been extremely concerned by the recent amounts of this greived toxin used in the state of Hawaii.  These chemicals are a serious harm to our health and especially the future of the next generation as a whole.  Like I said in my petition there had been 948 million pounds of pesticides in 2000 to 877 million pounds in 2007. But don't be fooled by the sudden and slight decrease of 1% because this was over a period of 7 solid years.  Besides the fact that it harms the island and despite the slight decline of use, these neurotoxins are still detected in the bodies of locals in Hawaii.  The consumtion of food and produce of the island, believe it or not goes down along with the pesticides.  This also creating soon to come sicknesses and illnesses from these harmful poisons.  If you could embark on this journey with me to end pesticide use on Oahu, create more awreness and exposure to this giant issue in Hawaii it would be greatly appreciated!
