Utah health/human orientation education isn’t teaching us what we need

Did you know that only 24 states and District of Columbia mandate sex education in public schools?

The reason that I'm starting this, started in my eighth grade health class in Utah when we got a packet for the parents to sign. The packet specifically said, "The following are NOT approved by the State Board of Education for instructions and may not be taught:

•The advocacy of homosexuality

•The advocacy of the use of contraceptive methods or devices"

Then in ninth grade in my Teen Living class with a standard that says we can't be taught about opposite sex relationships in our relationships and intercourse units.

I'm passionate about the standard changing because it's not giving the students who are different the right education. If the teachers say one little thing about it they can be fired. This isn't okay. It's also about how we can't learn about condoms and safe intercourse either.

What I want to change is the standard. We should be taught about all the possibilities of relationships and condoms. If you don't want teenage pregnancies to happen, why aren't we learning about condoms? This is a major issue in not just Utah, but America.
