Ms. Lucia Vega Jimenez was a 42-year old refugee from Mexico that was in Canada, although no one knows for sure how long or why she was there. While in Canada, she was arrested but through investigation, it was discovered her arrest was not criminal in nature. The Mexican Consulate in Vancouver got involved so that they could contact her family.

The problem is that, while Ms. Jimenez was being held in custody, she was discovered near death but there are very few answers. She had to be taken to a nearby hospital to be on life support with a family friend at her side. Her friend, Yasmin Trejo stated that “She doesn’t have a voice, she’s helpless, she’s laying there and we can’t do anything for her.” The news surfaced that Ms. Jimenez attempted suicide while in custody.

Ms. Trejo continued to say that“She had gone about 40 minutes without oxygen before they found her. I was in shock, she must have been maybe 5’1″, a small-framed woman. So for her to have the strength and the time to be able to do that to herself, she must have gone a long time without anyone taking a peek on her or checking up on her.” As it turns out, this poor lady was left unattended for many hours and not discovered for a lengthy period of time.

There have been many questions unanswered to help the family of Ms. Jimenez, such as what was she arrested for in the first place, what did she do wrong, did she get to talk to a lawyer and was anyone checking up on her?? They just threw her in a cell and walk away, leaving her in despair and confusion!

Ms. Jimenez reached out to her friend, Ms. Trejo, after being arrested.“She said basically I can’t go back [to Mexico], I’d rather be dead,” Trejo said. “She might have not followed whatever procedure there is when you come here. But I don’t think that made her a criminal, it didn’t make her a bad person. I think people need to get some sort of answers. We don’t want this to happen to anyone else. After all, the charges against her were not criminal in nature but she did not understand.”

Someone needs to gain some justice for Ms. Jimenez and find answers for her family and friends so that this does not happy to anyone else. Please sign and share this petition worldwide so that Canada border officials will look into a full investigation regarding the suicide death of Ms. Jimenez. She did not deserve to be treated so poorly and ultimately lose her life!

Canada and the Mexican Consulate in Vancouver – Please implement a full investigation in to the arrest, custody and ultimate suicide of Ms. Lucia Vega Jimenez. Her family and friends deserve to know all the details that led to her untimely death, why she was arrested, why did not have a lawyer and above all, why no one checked on the poor woman. Otherwise, she would still be alive today. Continue with an investigation to the full extent of the law until her family gets all the answers they deserve and have closure for the loved one they lost.
