Cameroon has plans to issue licences to drill for oil on protected wildlife reserves. Of the five blocks the territory, (both onshore and off shore), two are protected forests, Douala Edéa Wildlife Reserve and Ejagham Forest Reserve. The bidding began in January and will be opened until the end of June.

The Douala Edéa Wildlife Reserve contains tropical lowland forests, home to a population of critically endangered Western Gorilla, forest elephants and chimpanzees.15% of the reserve is Atlantic mangrove forest with populations of threatened marine species such as manatees and turtles.

The Ejagham Forest Reserve is a green corridor between Cameroon and Nigeria and is mostly lowland tropical forests with a wide range of biodiversity. Forest elephants, the critically endangered Preuss’s Red Columbus monkey and many bird species inhabit this region.

Tell Cameroon to stop stop plans to auction off licenses for oil drilling in wildlife reserves.
