Ban the Use of Poisons That Endangers the Vultures in Africa

For various reasons, people are poisoning many animals throughout Africa in hopes of killing the vultures so they will not circle overhead and signal park rangers. It has been documented that populations of eight species of vultures has declined an average of 62 percent in the past 30 years.  The problem is escalating quickly, which is detrimental for the environment.  Despite the fact that the vulture is not the most handsome of beings, it is a crucial for the ecosystem.

Researchers have stated that “Everyone forgets about the Ugly Bettys of this world.  We are told all the time by the authorities that they are so busy working to protect elephants and rhinos and other animals that when it comes to the vultures, they are exhausted. There are a lot of places along the Mara River that are not as clean as they once were because there are not enough vultures.” If the poisoning of animals and dead carcasses does not stop, the entire population of vultures will be a thing of the past.

Researcher Dr. Virani claims that vultures are dying everywhere. “Everywhere I went, there were dead vultures,” he said. “But everywhere, their remains were in good condition.” It is assumed that the birds are dying from poisoning or possibly some type of infectious disease. Soon it became clear that the killer was man-made.

Along with a full investigation, we are asking that there be a full ban on the use of poisons in any type of animal that is in essence wiping out the vulture population. The ecosystem would be horrific without the cleanup that is done by this amazing bird. It may seem disgusting to some but just think of what the world would be like without the crucial job of the vulture. Help us in our efforts to ban the use of poisons so that we can save the vulture from extinction by signing and sharing this petition.

Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, President & Commander-in-Chief, Wildlife Conservation & Management – We are strongly urging you to investigate the issue regarding poisoning of animals that is in essence wiping out the vulture population.  This is a crucial issue that could be detrimental for the environment since these birds are necessary to keep areas clean.  If poachers and others are going to continually poison animals and dead carcasses for their own gain, the vultures will fall prey to this practice and they will soon become extinct.  We need you to ban the poisoning of animals with more stringent, enforced laws!  This will be a very sad, filthy world without the useful vulture species of birds.
