Authorities were first alerted about twenty-one emaciated horses, three donkeys and a mule last summer near Cleburne, Texas last summer but they left those poor, thin animals in the owner’s custody, just giving him a warning. Supposedly the owner took some steps to improve the animals’ conditions so the case was closed. He was allowed to keep all these animals.
Unfortunately, further tips came back in on this same owner regarding deplorable conditions where the animals are kept with this same owner. When they returned to the property last week, the animals were in worse condition with no visible forage of hay or other grasses and any other food or water. On top of that, the animals resided in mud and dirt. Some of the horses were nothing but skin and bones while it was apparent one of them was euthanized on the site.
How could they just leave these animals in the care of an apparent animal abuser last summer and close the case without witnessing full cooperation from the owner and healthy horses, donkeys and the mule. The animals should have been removed from the property the first time they were discovered rather than subjecting them to more abuse and neglect by this guy.
We need to ask Texas to be stricter on seizing animals that are suspected of abusive care. If they suspected this guy last summer, someone should have made surprise visits to ensure he was abiding by the proper care he committed to and if not, the horses, donkeys and mule should have been removed way back then; they would be healthy and happy by now and possibly the euthanized one would still be alive. Any animal abusers in Texas should also be banned from ever owning, caring or even touching another animal for the rest of their lives.
The animals do not have a voice and cannot protect themselves. Early intervention could and would save their lives. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office – It should not be legal to leave animals in the care of an owner when it is quite clear of animal cruelty and neglect. You need to take stricter action in such cases and seize the animals immediately rather than subjecting them to further neglect and abuse. Not only should the animals be removed from an abusive owner, but that individual should never be allowed to every own or be near another animal as long as they live. Protect these animals that rely on their humans for care; punish this guy to the fullest extent of the law for the animal cruelty and neglect.
