Ask Fort Wayne Officials - Support Woman That Provides Fostering to Dogs

  • by: Sue Lee

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to encourage officials of Fort Wayne and Allen County to reconsider closing down a foster facility known as Perfect Paw.  This woman and her friend have such kind hearts in taking on dogs that otherwise would be euthanized or left homeless but the County Board of Zoning Appeals wants to stop her operation.  She is in many ways a lifesaver for these animals; don't close her down.

Tammy Derickson and a friend currently own 3 acres of property in Allen County, Fort Wayne, Indiana and currently own four Chihuahuas and 3 large Poodles.  In addition to their own dogs, they also take in foster dogs that need love and care. All animals are kept in the home, not a kennel.

According to Allen County ordinances, there is a limit of five dogs in a household due to neighbors complaining.  However, Derickson says the complaints come from other neighbors, not hers and the fosters. She also stated that she rehabilitates fosters to be good pets without any excessive barking.  Even those opposing the facility (or in this case a private home), they are very supportive of animal rescues. Derickson also stated that, among other points, that Perfect Paws saved 200 dogs from Animal Control in 2013 and has saved 175 so far this year. She also had a letter of support from Belinda Lewis, director of Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control.

There may be some downfalls to living near a foster home of many dogs but she is saving lives! We need to encourage authorities to let her continue her work and support her efforts. Allen County Board of Zoning Commission - Please reconsider your efforts in closing down the Perfect Paw foster home run by Ms. Derickson and her friend.  There should be more people like her saving animals from homelessness and early deaths.  If there is a distinct disturbance, I am sure Ms. Derickson would abide with putting up some sound barriers and abide with whatever it would take to continue her selfless work in favor of foster pets.  Don't take this privilege away from her and all the dogs she helps.  Do not stop her from doing her work.  Allow her the licenses and permits necessary in continuing to save dogs that may otherwise have a gloomy future.
