Wild horses have decreased by 98 percent since the 19th century due to government programs designed to remove the animals to make room for the meat industry's livestock to graze. According to the Wild Horse Preservation Campaign, each year, U.S. taxpayers spend $80 million to round up wild horses and "store" them in government holding facilities.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) uses helicopters to round up horses. The process traumatizes, injures and sometimes kills the animals. They are then separated from their families and stored in holding pens. Some are auctioned or sold for as little as $10 each, and many of these are send to slaughter. A beautiful 25-year-old wild mustang who lived for decades on the Utah's Sulphur Spring Herd Management Area is currently awaiting Internet auction, with a starting bid of just $25.
The National Academy of Sciences encourages birth control as a humane and cheaper solution to control wild horse populations. The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign suggests ecotourism as another alternative to terrorizing the horses with helicopters and storing them in holding pens. Please sign the petition to urge the Bureau of Land Management to stop rounding up and storing horses and to seek humane solutions for population control!
