This is a simple request asking hotel and resort chains to stop using plastic bottles for their toiletry needs. We need to ensure that plastic does not enter our oceans and landfills and the only way to do so is to reduce the amount of plastic that we are producing. Studies have shown that hotels can save money by using shampoo and soap dispensers in the bathrooms and this can have huge impact on the amount of plastic that will never be produced and will never need to be discarded. It might not seem like a big deal, but those little bottles add up to be a lot of wasteful trash that is never recycled. Customers that still want their soaps in the small plastic bottles can ask at the front desk like a few hotels do and we can make sure that the majority of use is through dispensers. Different kinds of plastic can degrade at different times, but the average time for a plastic bottle to completely degrade is at least 450 years. It can even take some bottles 1000 years to biodegrade! That's a long time for even the smallest bottle. As Edward Humes, author of Garbology, told Fresh Air's Terry Gross in 2012, the weight of plastic finding its way into the sea each year is estimated to be equivalent to the weight of 40 aircraft carriers. The number of fish in our oceans will be outweighed by plastic waste over the next 35 years, according to a new report from the World Economic Forum (WEF). This is not just important for the environment but aslo for future generations. We must try to reduce our reliance on plastic that we allow to enter into service and I am asking you to please join me and asking hotels and resorts to use dispensers for soap and shampoo and to ditch the tiny bottles that end up as bird and fish food and enter our food chain. We, as consumers, need to demand better environmental stewardship and this is a very cost-effective way for hotels to comply.
