Free Tibet

The Tibetan people are facing one of the darkest periods in their history of repression under Chinese rule.

Over 50 Tibetans from all walks of life are now confirmed to have set themselves on fire in protest at China's occupation of their homeland, calling for freedom for Tibet and for the return of the Dalai Lama. Whilst a number of our governments have individually expressed concern, China has so far failed to heed their appeals for independent experts to visit Tibet or listen to their requests that China address Tibetan grievances.

It is time to raise the stakes for Tibet. Please join Tibetans and supporters to urge some of the world's most powerful leaders to join together in initiating multi-lateral government action on behalf of Tibet.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am writing to express my grave concern about the situation in Tibet, during which over 50 Tibetans have self-immolated - 42 of them with fatal consequences - and mass protests have been brutally suppressed. This escalating tragedy shows no sign of ending unless the world acts, decisively and together. It's time for governments to Stand Together for Tibet.

I urge you, as the world's most influential leaders, to work together to establish an effective, visible, multi-lateral mechanism that will decide and implement strategies to bring an end to the current crisis.

I call on you to collectively tackle China about its policies in Tibet. Coordinated, multi-lateral pressure on China can save Tibetan lives and tell Tibetans in Tibet that the world is not immune to their suffering.

Tibetans need to know that their actions and appeals are being heard and answered with a roar of support from leaders around the world. Tibetans in Tibet need a reason to hope.

Sincerely,
