Save This Elephant from Depression!

For many years one lonely elephant has languished in his enclosure in the infamous Los Angeles Zoo. Petitions have rained on the city Council to send him to a sanctuary with others of his kind. But the politicians on the Council only care about the money the exhibit brings in from the ignorant crowds who jam the zoo walkways on weekends and vacation times. The unknowing visitors ohh and aah as they watch him rock back and forth dejectedly, endlessly. They take for granted that it's just elephant behavior at its natural best. The dismal enclosure of concrete, his chains, his hopeless head hanging without taking much interest in his surroundings don't affect his "fans." His harsh, colorless enclosure gets hosed down around him, but he continues with his rocking listlessly. At least provide this very social fellow creature of high intelligence some hope by giving him company, until he can be moved by popular pressure and opinion to a herd of his own kind in a sanctuary with trees, grass, a pond or lake, shade and sun in natural environment. Elephants love other animals too, why not give him a big tortoise to keep him company as his fellow and friend? Tortoises, like elephants, enjoy long lives--or long suffering. The two can console and uplift each other's mood, finding relief and even fun in the sun until the lonely tusker can be moved to better surroundings. The city Council needs to be pressured and constantly moved by our insistence, against its own inertia.
Please don't abandon animals like that solitary victim in the Los Angeles Zoo. Let's take a firm, unbending stand for justice for him and every other abused victim in inadequate and neglectful zoos all around our country until every animal enjoys the rights we take for granted in our apathy and complacency. Let's get up, stand up shouting and writing and signing petitions to end this frightful scourge of nature's own children, and grant them too, a constitutional right to the pursuit of happiness!
