Stop Unfair Ticketing In Sun Lakes

The Master Board has invested in a speed camera machine at great cost to the residents of our community and adopted an unfair rule of enforcement.

The rule says, in relevant part, that residents will be held responsible for speeding and other traffic violations committed by their visitors. The Board says this is analogous to other rules where residents are responsible for the actions of guests.

However, that is blatantly untrue and not analogous at all. In all other instances, guests are to be accompanied by residents and in those instances residents have supervisory control over the actions of their guests because the resident is physically present with the guest.

In contrast, when a guest is either entering or leaving the community, the resident has no direct supervisory control over the visitor; Hence, the analogy fails.

It also fails as a matter of basic fairness and equity. None of us should be held responsible for payment of a traffic violation committed by another licensed driver when Sun Lakes can hold those drivers directly responsible for payment.

On entering the community, guests should receive an entrance pass, which stipulates the driver understands they are gaining access solely with the understanding they will be held responsible for traffic and parking violations. The pass should be signed by the guest. The gate attendant would keep the original and a copy given to the guest. That acknowledgment can be printed on the back of the pass and the security guard should point that out to the guest.

We strongly urge the Master Board to take appropriate action to amend the rule elements which are described above. Do the right thing!
