A few weeks ago an old woman named Rosa died in Catalonia because of a fire caused by a burning candle. Gas Natural, one of the most important Spanish electric companies, had cut off her power supply, although this woman was going through a difficult economic situation, without telling anything to social services. This case is just the tip of the iceberg: every winter in Spain thousands of poor people are left without light or heating, and some of them die because of fires provoked by candles or coal heaters.
A country that pays the highest prices of electricity in Europe (despite our low purchasing power and the high availability of renewable energy) can not afford to abandon the citizens most affected by poverty and unemployment.
Because of that I ask to the biggest power companies in Spain (Endesa, Gas Natural and Iberdrola) to establish a symbolic social rate for families in difficulties and to stop cutting off the power without consulting social services before. Sign now my petition and help me to end ‘energy poverty’ deaths in Spain.
