Request that Georgia University Close Dental Program Using Dogs that are later euthanized

Please sign and share this petition to demand this Georgia University not use dogs in their dental experiments and learning, pulling out their teeth and later euthanizing the animals when they no longer need them.

This University needs to shut down this dental program in Augusta, Georgia that uses dogs to test human dental implants.  Once they no longer need the dogs for their tests and experiments, they euthanize them.  The Chairman of the Department of Periodontics, Dr. Christopher Cutler at the University defends the program, stating that the use of dogs to test human implants "a pioneering approach to solving a serious medical issue." “The program uses dogs because the types of diseases and bone loss the dogs experience are similar to what humans typically experience,” Dr. Cutler said.                

News of the dental implant prompted accusations of animal cruelty and a small protest.   According to investigations by the Humane Society, the dogs were used to pull teeth and replace with implants. The dogs were euthanized afterward and researchers took jaw bone samples from them.       

"I think everyone would like to get completely away from animal research, but it is so important to medical research," Dr. Cutler from the Georgia University said. "Every major breakthrough in terms of medical devices, in terms of cancer drugs, has first been tested in animals because of the complexity of the biological systems."  

With this dental program, it is appalling that they use the dogs for implant testing and then kill the animals because they don’t need them any longer.
