Help Salinas Mayor Joe Gunter and STOP THE RECALL AGAINST HIM!

SALINAS, Calif. -- The group behind the effort to recall the Salinas mayor isn't backing down. After previously being denied, the east side residents can now gather signatures to get the recall on the ballot.

Mayor Joe Gunter said if it actually happens, the election would cost taxpayers around $450,000-$500,000.

"What I find is it's rather disheartening because this is actually taking money away from city services," he said.

Gunter said the money it will cost to try and get him recalled could be used to add four police officers on the streets.

The group of residents are trying to vote him out after it claims he's responsible for the city's issues, including unemployment and high crime. At the forefront, the residents are upset the mayor isn't letting Councilmember Jose Castaneda sit on committees because he's also a school board member. The Attorney General's Office is looking into whether that's a conflict of interest, and the matter could be pursued in court.

"It's a matter of the law," Gunter said. "I didn't write the law that these are incompatbile offices."

Central Coast News was still waiting for the group behind the recall to issue a response as of Tuesday night.

Gunter said the city's budget is already stretched thin as it is. "I hope the voters read this before they sign this. We have a good city with a lot of good people and this is just a wasted effort," he said.

The group needs to round up roughly 7,600 signatures in order to get this on the ballot. The city clerk would need to validate all of the signatures and the council has to call for an election, then the city would have to open up the nomination period.

The recall could make it to the ballot sometime between February and March of 2014.

This really makes me mad! I personally know Mayor Joe Gunter! He is truly a wonderful man! Most of you that know me, know that I was shot when I was 18 years old while walking out of Northridge Theater. Then Detective, Joe took care of me. He stayed with me until the ambulance arrived and then he stayed with me in the hospital! This was NOT something that he had to do, but he did it because he TRULY CARES ABOUT PEOPLE! He even made contact with my family to make sure that I was doing well and that I was protected! You will NEVER get my name on this petition! Joe is a loving, honest and loyal man that truly cares about people! I WILL SUPPORT JOE IN ALL OF HIS ENDEAVOURS! You want a petition to recall him - how about I start a petition against it! Stop point fingers at Joe for your personal gain and start looking at this positive things that this wonderful man has done for our community!

Joe Gunter IS MAYOR AND NEEDS TO REMAIN MAYOR OF SALINAS! Please help Joe by siging my petition! We need to support our community and especially support those that are trying to lead out community in the right direction! MAYOR JOE GUNTER is that person!
