Scotland - Change Your Energy Policy

  • by: Judith B.
  • recipient: Alex Salmond, First Minister, Scotland

The Scottish National Party has a relatively green image. Or it did. Its latest idea for funding independence is not in the least environmentally friendly or sustainable, putting the lie to its claim to be one of the greenest governments in the world.

The SNP’s energy strategy includes North Sea oil plans that would pump ten million tons of carbon dioxide into an atmosphere which has more than enough already. Climate change and ocean acidification are already under way and the world must take real action on carbon emissions. What we don’t need is any more expansion of the oil and gas industry.

Scotland has an abundance of natural and cultural resources, including the potential to harvest more renewable energy that the population needs.

If independence is to be a success, Scotland needs to move forwards, not backwards by expanding a dying and deadly industry.

Tell Alex Salmond to create a much more sustainable energy policy.

We the undersigned ask that you redraft your energy policy to focus on sustainability and renewables, not fossil fuels.

Any claims to be a green government fall down when your energy strategy involves pumping an extra ten million tons of carbon into the atmosphere.

Scotland needs to look after its environment and people and work towards a sustainable future. It does not need environmental devastation of the sort that would be caused if these plans were put into action. The country has enormous potential for developing renewables and this is what the SNP should be focusing.

We ask that you reconsider these highly dubious plans.

Thank you for your attention.
