Support Scotland National Parks Association's Call for More National Parks

  • by: Kristi Arnold
  • recipient: First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond MSP

Currently, there are only two national parks in Scotland. Conservationists attending a conference on John Muir are calling for the creation of many more and note that Scotland ranks near the bottom in the world for its lack of national parks.

The Scottish government, however, said there was no compelling business case for setting up new parks. John Muir, the Scots-born naturalist, is the father of national parks in the United States, yet his homeland still lags behind the rest of the world in preserving its national treasures.

Charles Millar, chairman of APRS, said: ''As a nation we are currently near the bottom of the world league in terms of our number of national parks.

"We believe it would be a fitting tribute to the legacy of John Muir if the Scottish government set the wheels in motion to create some new national parks to protect and promote more of Scotland's magnificent landscapes and help regenerate some of the more economically fragile parts of rural Scotland.''

The Scottish government continues to rebuff the group's efforts. Join them in telling the government to preserve Scotland's natural beauty and establish more national parks!
