Save the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks

The Organ Mountains are home to one of the most diverse plant and wildlife communities in the Southwest.  The mountains are home to more than 800 plant species, including the very rare Organ Mountain primrose and Organ Mountain pincushion cactus, which grow nowhere else in the world.

Our Organ Mountains also provide you with hiking experiences to treasure with unsurpassed views of southern New Mexico.  As spectacular as the Organ Mountains are, there are other unique places in our neighborhood worthy of attention and protection.  The Desert Peaks of the Sierra de las Uvas, Robledos and Potrillo Mountains have their own gems.  They have historical and cultural features so rich that books have been written about the lands that Geronimo, Billy the Kid, and Apollo astronauts have traveled and used.

You can find petroglyphs of Native Americans going back 8,000 years, giving us tantalizing glimpses of the Mogollon and Hopi cultures.  Battles with Apaches, even during the Civil War, were fought here.  Imagine our grandchildren learning about these people, or about Billy the Kid, while hiking and placing their footsteps in the same spots that they and many other historic figures did.  This is our Western Heritage.

We need your help to stand to preserve these extraordinary areas.  Please help the Friends of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks give voice to protect these precious public lands by signing this petition today!

And please share it with anyone and everyone enjoys places like these and wishes to see these treasured lands protected.  You can also find out more information about the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument proposal at our website

Thank you,
See you in the mountians!

Dear Mr. President,

We are a people, native and visitors alike, leaders and volunteers, who care for our local public lands so deeply that it brings forth a request for you to act upon protection through a National Monument designation for our Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks.  It is a call to action that only you can complete.

Our Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks holds valuable cultural, historical and natural resources where not only today’s generations, young and old, will be able to enjoy, but with a National Monument status our future generations, our grandchildren, will also be able to enjoy these treasures and benefit economically and ecologically.  But whether it’s for recreation, clean air and water, for cultural and historic values, or as an economic boost to local communities, protecting this natural treasure just makes good sense.

Our Organ Mountains provide rich hiking experiences to treasure with unsurpassed views of southern New Mexico.  But there are other unique places in our neighborhood worthy of attention and protection.  The Desert Peaks of the Sierra de las Uvas, Robledos and Potrillo Mountains have their own gems.  They have historical and cultural features so rich that books have been written about the lands that Geronimo, Billy the Kid, and Apollo astronauts have traveled and used.  You can find petroglyphs and watering holes of Native Americans going back 8,000 years, giving us tantalizing glimpses of the Mogollon and Hopi cultures.  Battles with Apaches, even during the Civil War, were fought here.  Imagine our children and grandchildren learning about these people, or about Billy the Kid, while hiking and placing their footsteps in the same spots that they and many other historic figures did.  This is our Western Heritage.

We have visited these rugged and wonderful lands with friends and family and we never tire of exploring their beauty.  Although much has changed in Dona Ana County over the years, these mountains have remained as awe-inspiring as ever.  It is time to move past politics and make sure our grandchildren will also have decades to experience this wild land.  And we’d also like to extend an invitation to you and your family to join us and visit our gems of the desert so you may experience these beautiful vistas, cultural heritage and history at stake.

Please accept our invitation President Obama, and understand the importance of preserving these lands through signing the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks as a National Monument today!

Sincerely,

All who've signed from around the world,
and
