Say No to Donkey Meat Slaughterhouse in Kenya

Africa's first donkey slaughterhouse has been approved in Kenya, to meet the exploding demand for meat in China. China has "a high demand and market for donkey meat, and this slaughterhouse will take care of that," owner John Ngonjo Kariuki told the Kenya Standard Residents of Naivasha, where the abattoir is slated to be built, hope a licensed slaughterhouse might also address the problem of donkey carcasses littering the roadside - left behind by illegal traders who have been killing donkeys outside.

Sale of legal donkey meat may soon become a reality as a proprietor from Naivasha completes the construction of the first donkey slaughterhouse at Maraigushu, Naivasha in Nakuru County in the next few weeks. Reacting to this, area MP John Kihagi and some local residents say they are opposed to this initiative claiming it might contribute to a rise in donkey theft.

Eleven donkey carcasses have been found on the banks of River Thiba in Ngurubani town, Kirinyaga county. Richard Mwangi, a donkey cart operator, yesterday said he was shocked to find his three donkeys among those that were slaughtered and the carcasses left in the open.
