Stop the "Jaws Effect" to save sharks!

The movie Jaws has helped perpetuate the myth that sharks are a menace, to be hunted down and killed. The public needs to understand the need for sharks in their oceans, and that they are not "man-eaters".

Sharks are critical to the balance of our oceans, yet humans kill nearly 100 million of them a year, three-fourths of them just to cut off their fins for shark fin soup. Without sharks, entire marine ecosystems can collapse, affecting ocean health, fish populations, and food supplies.

Take Action: By signing this petition, we ask Steven Spielberg, director of Jaws, to help reverse the "Jaws Effect".

Dear Mr Spielberg -

Millions of people have seen your work, going back to include Jaws. Now, in 2012, we have a critical issue ...

Jaws captured people's imaginations, and put terror into some. But in 30 years, those toothed lords of our oceans have all but disappeared, most of them for a bowl of soup.

We are missing a vital, mass-appeal message that sharks are not all "man-eaters", and that there is no truth that "the only good shark is a dead shark".

Sharks help balance marine ecosystems and increase fish populations. The oceans regulate our atmosphere, but can't do their job with their health at risk. Some shark species are reduced by 98%, and there are already negative effects on our oceans.

Please undertake this critical mission. With a nod to Jaws, it's time to put the "Jaws Effect" to rest. We ask you to use your creativity to re-educate the public about these beautiful, mostly docile animals, and their place in our world. Please help now, and let this be a profound inclusion in your legacy.

Thank you!
