Jewish Heritage of Calcutta

It has come to our attention that the local boards of the Kolkata Jewish community challenge the authority of the Board of Management of which the Indian Joint Trust (affiliate of the Joint Distribution Committee JDC) to supervise and manage the affairs of the community and to safeguard our assets. While this was mandated by the High Court of Kolkata the local committees want to challenge this scheme.

As the Jewish community gets older and time does not stand still, my father along with others had a vision to get a body that was non profit making to safeguard our heritage. The JDC which is a part of the Jewish Agency (established under the inspiration of Theodore Herzl's organizational ideas for how to bring a Jewish state into being) fulfils this important role. We should feel honoured and relieved that in our absence our heritage will be well looked after all the Noah family and myself not to mention others put our faith in them.

I cannot comprehend why when this opportunity has presented itself, anyone would wish to bar it.

The people sitting on the local committees are:

Sol Noah
Jo Cohen
Mordy Cohen
Ian Zachariah ( spends many months a year in England)
Elisha Twena
Milton Alexander
Matana Alexander

Some new members may be joining who include:

Danny David
David Ashkenazy
Sidney Bannerjee
Brian Auckland

We think it is time for the Indian Joint Trust to take over and manage the community affairs with a professional manager or team that they select. We would appreciate all the local community members assisting them in their efforts on a voluntary as-needed basis.

We petition the Indian Joint Trust to take over the management of the community assets so we can be assured that the community assets and institutions are in very capable and honest hands.
