HELP SAVE OUR SCHOOL: The Minnesota School of Professional Psychology

The Minnesota School of Professional Psychology (MSPP), a Clinical Psychology PsyD program at Argosy University, Twin Cities abruptly ended on March 8th, 2019. When Argosy University closed its doors many MSPP students were left without viable options for continuing their doctoral education. Additionally, the MSPP faculty, who had spent a significant portion of their careers dedicated to educating and mentoring future psychologists, lost their jobs.

Since its establishment, MSPP has been known for producing high quality doctoral level psychologists who have gone on to serve multiple communities throughout Minnesota. These communities include our veterans, children, elderly, families, and individuals. An appreciation for equality, diversity and advocacy have been priorities of MSPP faculty and thus have been instilled in MSPP students. Additionally, the American Psychological Association (APA), the largest scientific and professional organization of psychologists in the United States, recently supported the work of MSPP by awarding the program 10 years of accreditation.

MSPP was the only doctoral level clinical psychology PsyD program in the state of Minnesota. Today there is no university in Minnesota providing students with the opportunity to gain a Clinical Psychology PsyD. While PsyD programs in other states who have suffered similar closures were fortunate enough to have been absorbed by other universities, MSPP has been left without similar in-state options. As a result, MSPP students must now choose between starting a new program, ending their current clinical psychology education, or relocating to another state. For many, relocation is not an option due to having children, families, and limited financial options. Moreover, MSPP students are proud to receive their education in Minnesota and want to continue serving Minnesotans as clinical psychologists.

To see MSPP come to an end without any effort to save such a valuable program would deny Minnesota the opportunity to continue producing high quality MSPP clinical psychologists. This would be a tragedy for students, for faculty and most importantly for the future of mental health in Minnesota.

What we need is a Minnesota university to step forward and be willing to help us continue on our journey of becoming clinical psychologists by absorbing the MSPP Clinical Psychology PsyD program. If a MN university were to consider helping MSPP in its time of need, they would be gaining the opportunity to work with an APA accredited PsyD program, in addition to a number of dedicated, driven, and importantly grateful budding psychologists.
