Canada: Ban Consumer Plastics

  • by: Amelia Meister
  • recipient: Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna

Microplastics are showing up everywhere now, even the food we eat! Recent studies show microplastics in the flesh of fish and shell fish from the Great Lakes.

Microplastics are tiny fibres of plastics that are generated from the slow disintegration of plastics into the environment. As plastic bags, cups, take out containers and even polyester clothing break down, they turn into tinier and tinier pieces of plastic that remain in the water and soil.

These pieces are then ingested by fish and shellfish and have started to contaminate the flesh of the fish we eat.

It is time to say enough is enough! Consumer plastics like bags, take out containers, cups and plastic bottles must be banned. These are superfluous and unnecessary plastics that contaminate the environment. Not only that, there are viable environmentally-friendly options already on the market so the transition would be easy.

Sign today and tell Canada to ban unnecessary plastics. By signing today you are standing for healthier fish, healthier water and a healthier future for all.

To Catherine McKenna,

As someone who cares greatly about the health and well being of our water, wildlife and citizens I am deeply troubled by recent findings of microplastics in the flesh of Great Lakes fish.

This is unacceptable. Microplastics are formed by the slow disintegration of plastics in the environment. Things like plastic bags, take out containers, cups and bottles are responsible.

These consumer plastics must be banned. They are unnecessary and there are already biodegradable and reusable options on the market.

The pollution from these plastics has unknown consequence to human and wildlife health. It must be curbed immediately so that any future health effects can be avoided.
