Stop Wallsburg Overlay Zone Proposal

This summer, 15 Wallsburg land owners proposed zoning code text amendments to the Wasatch County General Plan that would create what they call the “Wallsburg Overlay Zone” and clear the way for unprecedented development. Wallsburg is a small town loved for its rural beauty and this plan would open Wallsburg up to more growth than Wallsburg has ever seen.

For example, right now, there are only 94 houses within Wallburg’s city limits and about 300 houses in the entire Wallsburg valley. The current Master Zoning Plan allows for 97 houses to be built. The proposed Wallsburg Overlay Zone would allow for 600 to 900 houses to be built in the valley. This would be a 400% increase in houses built in Wallsburg.

Development requires resources. The more houses that are concentrated in one place, the more resources must be imported to support those houses. But, the residents of Wallsburg are currently seeing their water wells dry up and are struggling to obtain adequate water rights. No one knows where the water will come from to support the type of growth the proposed Wallsburg Overlay Zone would allow.

In addition to water issues, Wallsburg lacks adequate infrastructure to support this kind of development. The proposed zoning code amendments would require Wasatch County to build a new road, over-passes, and a sewer treatment plant using tax-payer dollars to support new development. Please tell Wasatch County to veto the proposed Wallsburg Overlay Zone plan by signing this petition. We already have a current plan in place that allows for slower development. The proposed Wallsburg Overlay Zone would allow for too much development, too fast in a beautiful, rural town that does not have the resources to support this kind of development.
