We're asking you to help us stop oil and natural gas exploration off the coast of North Carolina.  Please sign and share with others to show your support!

We the undersigned request that Dare County formally oppose any new offshore oil and gas drilling or exploration off the coast of North Carolina. We support a complete ban of petroleum exploration and production off the North Carolina coast to preserve our coastal economies and environments forever.

1. Opening the coast of NC to petroleum interests gambles a reliable tourism and residential income — $30 billion from clean beaches and coastal areas every two years [2002, The Marlowe Group] compared to an estimated $24 billion in revenue sharing after 30 to 40 years [2008 U.S. Mineral Management Service] — while offering no direct benefit for coastal residents themselves.

2. Research shows spill risks increase substantially both over time and with every new derrick and tanker — and increase still further when you consider North Carolina’s role as “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” its frequent winter storms and strong history of tropical activity (hurricanes).

3. North Carolina coast offers far more revenues and renewable income as a pristine tourist destination and commercial fishery than it will ever yield as a limited source of oil or natural gas.

4. This area is a highly sensitive habitat for wildlife (including protected and endangered species of fish, birds and turtles) and irreplaceable to humans.

NO MORE OIL! Put a wind farm out there instead!

The Outer Banks is special and close to me heart as well as many others and I think it would only hurt. Wild life in the ocean and on the beaches as well as tourism during the summer months would get smaller and smaller hurting the local economy. Its all around a bad idea. Our coastline is too precious and beautiful to sell out to the big business monster.

I urge you to not lift the present ban on offshore drilling in NC. Our states beauty and natural resources are not worth risking. As a resident of Dare county I fear that an unfortunate accident from oil rigs would be detrimental to our local economy. Many of our residents would not be able to survive financially if our tourism industry would suffer from just one summer season of an oil spill. The moratorium was issued for a very good reason the first time. Please don't sell off our precious coastline to big business.

We are slowly but surely destroying ourselves and our planet. If GREED could be replaced by GREEN then we could replace the damage we've already done.

No to offshore drilling. We need green energy. Do not waste precious time and money on the unsustainable mistakes of our past.

Don't turn the Outer Banks into what the Gulf Shore has become. It only prolongs oil dependence, anyway.

We've used Coastal Carolina as our getaway for years. We've surfed there, fished there, vacationed there, we own property in Wilmington, NC and believe it would be a mistake to open the coastal areas for offshore drilling. The risks outweigh the short-term financial gains.

Drilling off the N.C. coast is irresponsible management of the Barrier Islands of the Outer Banks that counts on the draw of tourism to it's beaches.

As an Outer Banks resident and US Coast Guard veteran I am urging our government to not allow for oil drilling off our beautiful NC coast. The benefit to our economy is minimal compared to the possible environmental tragedies that could occur. Which would cost even more for our government and local population. If there were to be an oil spill off our coast it would ruin the tourism that we depend on to get us through each year. Myself as well as most of the local people I know here would not be able to survive a summer season if there were oil an oil splill on our beaches. Please consider these concerns and don't sell off our natural treasures.

Regardless of your environmental orientation, the economics are simple: The risk is not worth the reward.

I am a resident of Currituck County and I am adamantly opposed to offshore drilling for any type of fossil fuel anywhere near the Outer Banks of NC or any coastal waters near the U.S.

I am unequivocally opposed to offshore oil or gas drilling. Our local economy is sustained by tourism and our beautiful and natural area which would be catastrophic and irretrievable damaged by waste and the biproducts of drilling

Solar energy and biofuel research are readily available and provide an alternatively much safer focus for renewable energy production needs. By following the route of the expedient, we set the precedent that insufficient awareness favoring beneficial gains justifies the undesirable consequences
