Dear Mr Zhihan,
From the testimony of those have visited the Kunming zoo it is clear that many of the 700 animals there have been subject to cruelty and abuse on a massive level. These animals are living in concrete yards, cages and featureless pits with nothing to break the monotony of their lives. They are forced to beg for food in competition with those animals around them, and some are made to perform and are beaten and goaded by staff if they rebel or make mistakes.
We, the undersigned, ask that the conditions in the zoo be improved hugely. Please allow the animals more freedom to move around in larger enriched enclosures with proper heating and bedding, do not lock bears, monkeys and tigers into cages far too small for their size and please stop offering the public photo opportunities with tethered tigers, and elephant rides on animals that are terrified and volatile. Please forbid your staff from beating the animals- they should be there to improve the quality of life for the animals not subject them to more and unbearable misery.
This level of cruelty and neglect will do nothing for China%u2019s global image among nations that are beginning to recognize animal rights and people who will fight for animals the world over. Please show some humanity and do the right thing.
