Independent Pet Sitters Voice Concerns to PETCO

Target:
PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc.

UPDATE:  Representatives from PETCO have been very willing to listen to our concerns and consider other options.  On April 6, 2009, I had a lengthy phone meeting with them.  A possible resolution would be an alliance with an organization, such as PSI (who they are considering meeting with), that allows ALL professional sitters to be members and listed in their directory.  This would be a great step in the right direction for EVERYONE--PETCO, sitters, customers and the pets loved by us all.  Considering all the animal related good works that PETCO is engaged in,  I'm hopeful that a resolution can be reached that will allow everyone to continue to support those works.  Please let PETCO know your thoughts.  If you've already signed the petition you cannot sign again, but you can call them and let them know your thoughts about how much better an alliance with PSI versus a franchise would be.  The number for their customer relations is

1-888-824-7257.

In a press release dated April 30, 2009, PETCO announced its partnership with Fetch! Pet Care.  Specifically, the release said:

"PETCO, a leading pet specialty retailer with more than 950 locations across the country, will exclusively offer FETCH! Pet Care's professional pet sitting, dog walking and pet taxi services to its customers beginning this month in select markets."

Independent pet sitting businesses across the nation urge PETCO to reconsider this "exclusive" arrangement with Fetch!.  Independent businesses are legitimate, professional businesses and should not be confused with using a neighbor or a friend to care for your pets.  In the past, PETCO has denied independent businesses to advertise, or even place business cards on their bulletin boards, because their stated company policies prevented support of anything other than official non-profit organizations.  This was acceptable, because it placed all pet sitting businesses on a level playing field.

However, with this new development, PETCO is going against its own policies, and promoting one business over another, and we feel, with disregard for providing the best possible care of family pets.

Despite the claims that Fetch! makes, many individual FETCH! sitters are NOT trained by FETCH!.   The franchise owner (who may or may not live in the service area) is trained in business practices, which is hardly the same as each sitter being trained in pet care.  Conversely, independent sitters have their personal reputation on the line and participate in on-going training in pet first aid and animal behavior.

We urge PETCO to do some more research and verify the claims made by FETCH!  Claiming 1800 service areas is NOTHING compared to the thousands of professional pet sitters running ethical dependable companies in nearly every city across the nation. A "service area" does not define the number of clients served--it is based solely on population. So many of those service areas are within the same city.  There are more cities NOT served by Fetch! than there those with a Fetch! franchise.  Independent sitters, who have been around much longer than 2002--some for as long as 20 years--have established a huge client base who turn to their pet sitters for advice on pet supplies and products.  We would not recommend PETCO to hundreds of thousands of clients if the partnership with FETCH! negatively impacts our potential for continued growth.

It is unforgiveable that PETCO would undermine the success of countless small businesses across the nation to support one particular franchise.  At the very least, ALL pet sitting businesses should be allowed to advertise in local PETCO locations, and let the pet owner decide what option is best for them.

Please sign this petition and let PETCO know that this partnership is disappointing to you as a pet sitter, pet owner, or concerned citizen.

This past year Petco has disappointed me time after time, but I kept going back. This just draws the line for me. Who ever sits up there and makes these terrible choices one after another. Should rethink some, if not all of them. I went into Petco last week and it was dead in there. They were out of the stuff I needed so I went to Petsmart. It was very busy with three cashiers going at once. Does that tell you somthing. I don't think they can survive without all of our support. Shopping and doing all our business with Petco I too threw my Petco card away, sorry to say I will never shop there again.

Fetch is paying 11% back to Petco. This is factual and stated by the fetch franchise owners who disagree with the contract with Petco as it is too much profit to take out of our small business as well! This is PURE greed by Paul Mann, owner of Fetch Pet Care.

Regardless of training, a franchisee is no more or less failable than any other pet sitter. Equalize or remove the playing field.

How disappointing Petco. Pet sitters utilize your store to buy supplies and can recommend customers to you.

In 1981 I became one of the original Professional Pet Sitters who believe in the personalized care provided to pets and their owners. Many long-standing customers of Independent Pet Sitters consider their sitters to be part of the family. It is problematic that Petco is helping one company that is trying to control the Pet Sitting Industry. By forming a monopoly with Fetch they are underestimating the foundation of the pet sitting industry and their clients.

it would be great if Petco would partner with PSI

As a petsitting professional, I was disappointed in Petco's decision. When I pet taxi my clients for grooming to Petco, when I purchase food for my clients at Petco, and I have to look at brochures for Fetch and hear them trumpeted on the in-store radio - it is discouraging and I wonder, "why am I spending money here???". Franchising of service businsses does not lead to better service - for many reasons! Petco definitely needs to re-think their affiliations!!

They are not just referring to Fetch but advertising for them, the other day I heard an ad for them on Petcos speakers in the store. It is obvious Petco is getting a kick back from Fetch so shopping there is like shopping at your competitions store. I will no longer shop there for my dog and cat, I have spoken with several clients and they also believe it is unfair and will shop at Pet Smart - the local competition for Petco. I belong to a local county wide pet sitter networking group and all members have agreed to do the same. In addition some of my clients and other pet sitters clients have them pick up their pets supplies for them we are taking that business to Pet Smart or other competition. If Petco were to refer to Pet Sitters International or Napps I and other pet sitters would be fine with that. Lori

I'm really disapointed that Petco has gone back on it's word by supporting one franchise & not support the independent Pet & Housesitters that have been in business, whether the independent business is new or been around for many years. The independent pet sitters have experience in pet care, as that is our specialty. In having our own businesses, we have been trained in 1st aid & animal behavior. People who'e not had that type of training put themselves, the pets in danger & will give Pet Sitting a bad reputation when a client has a bad experience. The bad apples that are bound to occur will reflect badly on all of us who've worked hard to keep the industry a good one. The very idea that Petco would put the many small businesses in such a bad light is unforgivible. Petco needs to give each pet owner the opportunity to make their own decision of who is to care for their pets & that there is more than one place to go for pet care.

People know who I am, but if not, I was the VP of Business Development for Fetch! until they decided to terminate my employment.....the karma back to Fetch! will kill this deal!

I am a professional pet sitter and I own my own business in Boulder, CO. It saddens me to think that there will be one more way that my business will start hurting this year...the economy made enough financial changes for my family as it is. I think the playing field should definitely be evened out and not have just one pet sitting service called out above the others.

Petco should be proud to sponsor independent LOCAL pet sitting services. The ones that buy from their stores! Not some ''Hollywood'' sponsored service .

My professional pet sitter told me about this petition, and I think it's awful what Petco plans to do, "exclusively" partnering with Fetch! It's not fair business practices. I love my pet sitter and the care she provides my pets! She should have the same opportunity to partner with a big store like Pet Co.

It is clear to see that Fetch! is doing everything it can, with Petco's help, to alienate itself from the professional pet sitting community in this country. Fetch! is not everything it claims to be, neither in training, quality of service, nor service areas. Bad move, Petco.
# 554:

This is a ridiculous, underhanded ploy by Fetch! As an owner of a pet sitting business, this is totally inappropriate to other small business from the same industry in these economic times. Is Fetch! really this desperate for new clients?
# 553:
3:07 pm PDT, May 21, Name not displayed, Colorado
I use a local professional pet sitter and think this is an unfair "monopoly" method of marketing Fetch! and Petco are getting involved in. Petco should concern itself with educating pet owners about alternative pet care from ALL sources, as many still do not know there are other options besides kennels and boarding. I will not shop at Petco any more if this goes forward.

This seems very unfair and I would not hesitate to shop at Petsmart or other pet stores and not shop at Petco if this is not changed!
