Save Florida's bears from trophy hunters!

Trophy hunters in Florida are pressuring the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for a new bear hunt. During the past ten years of protection, black bears -- threatened in Florida -- have slowly come back from a perilously low population. Now a few people who want a trophy hide or head could blast all this progress away.

The FWC is hearing from lots of trophy hunters, and the bears need you to speak for them. Please comment now -- we make it easy -- and ask the FWC not to approve a black bear trophy hunt. Thank you.

Dear [Decision Maker],

Please continue to keep the threatened Florida black bear protected from trophy hunting, as it has been for more than a decade.

Black bears are not only an important keystone species in the state, but a beloved and charismatic animal.

Black bears are shy animals who pose little threat to the people of Florida, and hunting them simply will not reduce the small number of conflicts reported each year.

Not only does hunting fail to reduce conflicts with bears, but as bear hunting increases, the number of conflicts has been shown to increase as well.

The black bear population in the state has only recently recovered after being forced to the brink of extinction through habitat loss and hunting.

There is no need for a trophy hunt in the state. Most conflicts with bears involve garbage, birdfeeders, pet food, or another human-supplied food source. Simply making these things inaccessible will easily eliminate most conflicts. But so far, not enough effort has been made to keep food out of the reach of bears. Bear-resistant trash cans -- not bullets -- keep bears out of our neighborhoods. Hunting does not target the so-called problem bears who live near suburban homes, because hunters target large males in wilderness areas, who would make impressive trophies. Shooting bears at random is as effective at reducing conflicts as shooting into a crowded street is at reducing crime. Please opt for effective, humane solutions to problems with bears. There is simply no need for a trophy hunt. Please keep Florida's bears protected, as they have been for years.

Sincerely,
