SAVE OUR NATIVE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN CORELLAS

  • by: Parrot Rescue Centre

The Department of Environment and Heritage also under the banner of Wildlife Recue has agreed to CULL Corellas in Maylands, WA. The DEH Zoologist Mr. Peter Mawson states "the introduced corellas were causing a range of problems throughout Perth. They impact on public amenity, infrastructure, playing fields and they compete with native cockatoos for nest hollows." (Perth Now, 29/3/2011)

Our Native Australian Corellas have/are - being publicly gassed/executed.  We refer to the Eastern Reporter (Perth Now,29/03/2011) where local resident, Alina Judge, states exactly what she saw; "They lured them (the corellas) with grain (captured in nets) and then hooked a hose up to a car exhaust.  The birds left up in the trees were squawking, probably because they were family".  Adding insult to injury, the DEH Zoologist Mr. Peter Mawson (ordering these executions), stated that "the gassing method was a humane way of reducing bird numbers".

Do you appreciate our unique Australian Wildlife? IF SO PLEASE SPEAK UP AND HELP US DEFEND THEM.

We the undersigned would like to voice our objection towards the culling of Australian Native Corellas in WA.

These corellas would not have the need to come into urban areas if it was not for the fact that much of these birds natural habitat has been destroyed due to development.

We strongly protest against the horrific and torturous method of gassing of Australian Native Corellas to reduce their numbers. Other humane avenues of action need to be assessed, so that appropriate long term solutions can be found. Killing is an unacceptable solution.

Some suggestions would be to ban the feeding of wild birds. Feeding wild birds stops them from doing their natural behaviours such as foraging for their food and gives them more time to be destructive. Another vital suggestion would be to stop the large scale destruction of the birds native bush land. We continue to push our suburbs out into these birds native habitat and then expect them to leave. Who was here first? We need to find a way to coexist with nature rather than continue to destroy it.

As we observe the numbers of supporters increase, the true Aussie Spirit that has care and concern for our unique native animals becomes evident.
