Store after store after store, Bettas are seen in Walmarts without enough water. Their water is always FILTHY, and many of these beautiful fish are dieing and dead from the horrific conditions. Walmart needs to stop selling them for profit because no one overseas their care properly. It's inhumane treatment in the name of profit. Shame on Walmart!!!!

I constantly see dead fish at local walmarts and have given up trying to rescue them, as they usually die within a year anyway. i've even seen an instance where someone INTENTIONALLY put a small fish in that tiny plastic cup with the betta. I wonder how they'd feel if someone threw them in a lion's den....

I was in a Walmart in Chicopee, Massachusetts today. They had Bettas which, while in enough water, were all suffering from such bad fin rot that their fins were close to being completely GONE! They had at least 10 other fish tanks and several didn't even have the filters turned on. At least 75% of the goldfish in the goldfish tank were DEAD or dying because they couldn't breathe and were clearly not being fed. Not one fish tank was free from having at least a few dead fish. This is REPULSIVE. The manager claimed that the fish came like that and that there was something wrong with them and they were to be replaced soon. She didn't even address the question of why the filters weren't turned on. Her explanation was a complete and utter LIE! An employee there even said that the people back there aren't trained and don't take care of the fish and that this has been an ongoing problem. This person whom I will leave anonymous also said that many other Walmarts have stopped selling fish due to this problem. PLEASE HELP DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BY CALLING THEM AND TELLING THEM TO TURN THE FILTERS ON AND FEED THEIR FISH!!!!!! These fish don't deserve this utterly inhumane treatment and something NEEDS to be done. The number is 4135933192 TELL THEM TO TURN THE FILTERS ON!!! If you want to stand up and take this a step further the number for the Walmart customer service department is 1800walmart and the number for the Walmart ethics department is 1800wmethic. It is in your hands to stand together and do something about this. The more people we can get to speak out against this treatment the more results we might be able to see. Thanks for caring

Last week while shopping in Walmart in Murphy, N.C. I noticed the Beta
fish in the little plastic containers. That was bad enough but one had about 1/2 inch of water. When I called it to the attention of the clerk who was filling the containers, he smirked and said, "Oh, they can breath air."

Hey everyone, I bought a Betta from walmart last wek, it was so skinny that when I got it home it would'nt eat. The next day it was belly up, thats cruel to starve something like that. I was in there one day and I heard the manager tell the fish manager not to feed the fish because they were going to be sold to quick. Thats pretty sad when they are so cheap they won't even open a can of food. I hope they get those fish out of there and they need to be fined!!!!!!!!

I got a tiny aqua-blue betta yesterday; today she died. DUE TO NEGLECT and overfeeding from Walmart....they do not treat the ill fish, she was left with the others, and I so happened to see her, so tried treatment at home with medication for swim bladder and bacterial infection. It is highly wrong that Walmart sells betta fish!!! Nobody is qualified to understand their antics. She could only float, and sometimes she was in a vertical position. This is unacceptable and inhumane. Even a fish's life is LIFE! By the way, I wholeheartedly agree with Jennifer Owens. . . Walmart only wants the $$$ profits! I'd like to know how effective it is to sign this petition, since I've already signed one before. THIS TIME it is because she died!
On a different occasion, I rescued a female, and now she is thriving! She was grey....sign of stress. Nobody saw any beauty in her. Walmart does not study the fish' habits and personalities...
I am the owner of 30+ bettas!!! Walmart is CRUEL to betta fish life!

I have seen these poor things just sitting in these tiny little containers and often wonder "is it dead?" I honestly feel it's better for them to be dead instead of having to live in such a small area. Like everyone else, I see them stacked on top of each other and this is just not right. I know they're not elephants, wild cats or even dogs or domesticated cats but they are STILL LIVING BREATHING CREATURES and should not be treated this way. I am SO sick and tired of "man" thinking that we are superior therefore we can do whatever we want, when we want to sattisfy our own needs. Someone made a comment about how a salemen came up to her and asked if she needed help and while trying showing her concern for the fish, the lady just walked away from her in mid-sentence... I get that ALOT when trying to speak up on the behalf of animals... it's very very sad and sometimes I feel ashamed that I am part of the human race and feel like I have to apoligize to God for how we humans are!

I saw the Betta fish as the Walmart in the Woodlands, TX and I was felt I just had to say something. I complained gently to one person who called over a person from teh Pet Dept. They were friendly but didn't understand what I was talking about. Another lady asked if I needed help and I explained the fish were dying and in too little water and she walked away from me in mid-sentence. I left without buying anything. I felt so bad for the fish dying their in their small cups in an inch of water. It was very sad.

The Wal-Mart near where I live, they have fish in cups stacked on top of each other. They could be knocked over and displaced. Also, the water is filthy. Please stop selling fish!

Walmart should not be permitted to sell ANY fish or live animals. They are too large of a store, with too broad a range of products, to be able to offer proper care for live animals. Employees tend to be poorly trained in some stores, which only increases the likelihood that animals will receive mediocre or poor care. Walmart is not a specialized pet store, and therefore should not be permitted to sell pets.
