NO to exploitation of Yasuni

The Yasuni -ITT Initiative was a proposal that came from environmental groups and taken by the government of Rafael Correa in 2007 , to condition the possibility that the Ecuadorian State permits the extraction of oil in the ITT oil block located in the north Park area.

It was based on that developed countries pay Ecuador each year financial compensation to keep that territory without oil exploitation, with half of it worth their possible exploitation, the Ecuadorian state participated with the financial compensation for the other half , in refusing to exploit the national park and not export oil to other countries.

Finally in 2013 the Ecuadorian government canceled the campaign because the international financial compensation was not achieved , as previously agreed with that presented the proposal and announced that 0.1 % of the national park will be used for oil extraction 3 which is 10 km ² ( 1000 ha) , which is expected to generate around 18,000 million USD (600 million dollars a year for 30 years).

Thus the government of Ecuador initiated a campaign of exploitation of Yasuni National Park

Yasuní is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and represents one of the great riches of Ecuador . Biodiversity that is located in the Yasuni is unique in the world , is the only place in a single hectare are around 644 different species of trees.

For biodiversity, UNESCO declared the Yasuni biosphere reserve as this statement took place on November 20, 1979 . For this reason , the park should be subject to the "Strategies of Seville" (1995) document that the reserve functions (Article 3) is highlighted. This means that the biosphere reserve is important not only for the communities living in and around it , but also to society , to the extent that promotes sustainable development model.

The Yasuní park is a sanctuary for jaguars, but the exploitation of Blocks 31 and 43 announced by the Government , can alter the delicate balance of the ecosystem where they live thousands of years ago. At least if you take into account the oil history of recent decades , characterized by the devastation of the forest and its species.

Yasuni National Park is one of the Pleistocene wildlife refuges . These places were formed during the dramatic climate changes that ended 10,000 years ago. That's a scientific reason for its wealth, which places as the area of greatest biodiversity. It houses a million species ( mostly insects ) , close to one-tenth of the life on the planet . These organisms survived millions of years and carry in their genes that information vital to know, such as how to tackle global warming and still incurable disease. In this region, 1 762 species of trees and shrubs are described, over 366 not yet been studied . Three decades ago this information was not documented , was unknown.

Yasuni National Park

• The arboreal biodiversity reaches 644 species per hectare .
• There are about 621 species of birds.
• There are 173 species of mammals.
• 11 species of amphibians.
• 107 species of reptiles.
• 385 species of fish and invertebrates.

The size of the territory to be exploited Yasuní equivalent to 1000 Olympic tennis stadium Atahualpa or two city parks . Two biologists consulted quantify not risk species or individuals that will be lost in that space after the oil intervention.

It is possible that the felling 10 hectares , it is destroying the habitat of a family of monkeys are forced to migrate to another area. In this new area you may live and another population of the same species and prevent the arrival of the other monkeys . " In the jungle, the animals live everyday ie they eat what they find in a specific area , if they remove that area will have to find where to get food but will be much more difficult and could happen not find food for much time and starve "
