Fire Cops Who Stood By During Brutality

Charda Gregory is a twenty-two-year-old hairdresser and single mom. On November 13, 2013, Gregory went to a party where she believes she was drugged. She woke up disoriented in a motel with no recollection of how she got there. Gregory was arrested for trashing a room. She was pepper sprayed. The police did not investigate the possibility that she may have been raped.

Gregory's treatment worstened once in police custody. Brutal video footage shows Gregory—who can barely stand—being restrained and having her hair brutally cut. Clip-in hair extensions are frequently confiscated upon arrest, but Gregory had a weave sewn into her actual hair. Officer Bernadette Najor dragged Gregory to a chair, took a pair of scissors, and began to hack away at Gregory's hair. Gregory can be seen kicking and writhing in pain, and now has bald spots from places where Najor ripped her hair out at the roots.

Najor has since been fired for her part in the incident. But as the video clearly shows, she was not the only officer at the scene. The male officers who assisted during this brutal treatment still have their jobs.

Let the Warren police force know that this kind of treatment is unacceptable.

Dear Commissioner Green,

We sign this petition out of concern for the wellbeing of the people of Warren, MI. Bernadette Najor may have been fired for assaulting Charda Gregory, but the other officers present for this incident have not been disciplined for their part in it. People who stand by and let their colleagues trample human rights have no business being in a position to protect the public. We ask all other officers involved receive the same punishment as Najor for neglecting to prevent this cruelty.

Sincerely,
